OVERVIEW: The Angelakis Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to education, youth, the arts, health, and human services. It also earmarks funds for environmental, religious, and Greek causes.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: The Angelakis Family Foundation was established in 2005. It was founded by Christine and Michael J. Angelakis, former Comcast CFO and Vice Chairman. The couple are based in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia. Michael J. Angelakis graduated from Babson College. He was CEO of State Cable TV Corporation and Aurora Telecommunications. He also served as managing director and a member of the Management and Investment Committees of Providence Equity Partners. He went on to serve as Comcast’s vice chairman and CFO. Michael Angelakis went on to found Atairos, an independent private company focused on supporting growth-oriented businesses across a wide range of industries, with offices in New York and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

The foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts further information on its grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Angelakis Family Foundation funds grantmaking related to education, youth, the arts, health, and human services. It also earmarks funds for environmental, religious, and Greek causes.

The couple support their alma mater Babson College, where Christine sits on the board. The family prioritizes giving to William Penn Charter School (the couple are parents and Christine is an overseer). Other grantees include Steppingstone Scholars, Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA, Inner City Scholarship Fund, UPenn, Bowdoin College, and The Reverend Pinckney Scholars Program, which “promotes access to higher education for African American students by awarding scholarships and providing strong.” The Angelakis family have also supported Squash Smarts. The couple’s daughter Demi played squash at Bowdoin. The couple’s son Luke, meanwhile, graduated from UPenn.

Grants for Arts and Culture

Grantees include Philadelphia Museum of Art, Gladwyne Free Library, and Barnes Foundation, which is “home to one of the world’s greatest collections of impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern paintings.”

The Angelakis family, via their foundation, have supported Kid’s Smiles, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, American Cancer Society, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Philabundance, a food bank.

Grants for Greek Culture

The couple have also funded environmental organizations like The Kiawah Conservancy. They have also supported religious outfits like St. Christopher’s Church and Greek organizations like The Hellenic Initiative, a “global, non-profit, non-governmental secular institution whose mission is to develop sustainable economic and business improvement programs to empower the Greek people toward long-term prosperity.”
