OVERVIEW: The Archstone Foundation’s grantmaking focuses on the health and well-being of older adults in California.

IP TAKE: Archstone’s focus is the coordination of care for elderly residents of the state of California, with overarching goals of increasing access among marginalized and vulnerable groups. This funder conducts its giving through a lens of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and demonstrates strong interest in capacity building for organizations that share its goals.

This is an accessible and approachable funder. Grantseekers can reach out with questions at any time or contact individual staff members, whose email addresses are provided on the website. The application process begins with an eligibility questionnaire, after which LOIs and full proposals are invited. Application windows and due dates are subject to change, however, so sign up for the foundation’s newsletter at the bottom of the website to keep up with the latest opportunities.

PROFILE: The Archstone Foundation, based in Long Beach, California, was established in 1985 when a nonprofit HMO, FHP, Inc., became a for-profit corporation, and the fair market value of the assets was used to endow the foundation. Its mission is “to improve the health and well-being of adults 65 and older and their caregivers.” Grantmaking focuses on Integrated Care among “healthcare, social services and related systems,” as well as Capacity Building for California organizations “working to improve access to health and social service care for older adults in California.” All grantmaking is conducted through a lens of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Giving mainly stays in California, although some national health policy organizations have also received support.

Grantmaking for Aging, Public Health, Mental Health and Racial Equity

Archstone currently runs two grantmaking programs.

  • Grants for Integrated Care focus on “team care, training and technology” for the coordination of health and social services for elderly people in California.
    • Goals of this grantmaking include improved outcomes, reduced racial disparities in well-being and increased access to culturally competent care.
    • Grantees include Connecting for Better Health, ElderHelp of San Diego, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles and Groceries for Seniors.
    • Check the program page for updates about RFPs or sign up for the foundation’s newsletter at the bottom of the page.
  • Capacity Building grants provide up to $50,000 to organizations working to improve the accessibility of services to older adults in California and whose missions align with Archstone’s priorities related to “justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.”
    • This program runs an annual RFP, but grantseekers must compete a screening questionnaire in order to apply. Find the most recent guidelines and due dates here and see the program’s FAQ.
    • In addition to grants, the foundation partners with Catchafire, an enterprise that “helps companies, employees, foundations, and their nonprofit partners build meaningful programs that drive measurable impact.“
    • Grantees include the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations, the Vital Access Care Foundation, Aging While Black and the American Society on Aging, among others.
