Funding landscape and giving trends in Arizona

Grantmaking in Arizona has accelerated since the early 2010s, when Arizona’s population influx began to increase. Home to about 1,200 active grantmakers since 2018, more than $427.9 million in grants have been awarded to Arizona-based organizations. While this number seemed to peak in 2011 and 2014, grantmaking has since plateaued, but holds steady as the state’s government continues to slash human services, basic needs and education funding, among other important issues.

In addition to IP, knowledge about grants for Arizona nonprofits also runs through the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum, which merged in 2022. As well, the Arizona State University Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation provides annual research on this giving space. Grants for health outpace all other areas of funding, perhaps due in part to the state’s aging population and volume of retirees; health is followed by grants for education, human services, arts and culture, and animals and the environment.

That said, Arizona’s top funders are a mix of private, public and community foundations, which have raised Arizona’s grantmaking profile by millions as more people move to the state, but it remains behind neighboring states in the Southwest. Major funders of Arizona grants include Arizona Community Foundation, The Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation, The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation, the Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation, Ben and Catherine Ivy Foundation, MUFG Union Bank Foundation, Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation, Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, David and Ruth Coleman Charitable Foundation, Inc. and the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.
