OVERVIEW: The Breneman Jaech Foundation supports literary and youth arts programs in the Seattle area.

IP TAKE: The Breneman Jaech Foundation dismantled its website but continues to support Seattle area organizations that run literary or participatory arts programs. This funder tends to make grants to a corps of organizations year after year, and it doesn’t accept unsolicited proposals. Without a connection to Linda Breneman or a past grantee, it might be tough to break in here.

PROFILE: The Breneman Jaech Foundation was founded in 2000 by writer Linda R. Breneman and family. Linda Breneman grew up in Eastern Washington and attended the University of Washington. She worked as a technical editor and writer for companies like Battelle and Boeing. These days, she works on fiction, essays and video game journalism. She was married to Jeremy Jaech, founding member of Aldus Software, which merged with Adobe in the mid-1990s. She is married to Eric Strand, an independent software professional.

The foundation mainly supports arts and culture programming in the Seattle area.

Grants for Arts and Culture, Arts Education

Breneman Jaech’s arts and educational giving focuses on participatory arts programs, writing and literature. In the 1990s, Linda co-founded Richard Hugo House, a literary center in Seattle, and continues to support the outfit. Other grantees include Seattle Arts and Lectures, the University of Washington, Humanities Washington and Town Hall Seattle, “a venue for civic, arts, and educational programs that reflect the region’s creativity, empathy, and voice.”

Grants for Mental Health

Youth mental health appears to be an area of interest for this funder. Ongoing support has gone to the Garage in Issaquah, “a free drop-in space for high school teens to hang out, socialize, and access counseling and case management services.”
