OVERVIEW: The Cameron Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking for education. It also earmarks funds for other community causes like health and the environment.

IP TAKE: The Cameron Family Foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts transparency about its grantmaking strategies and guidelines. Since Cameron prefers to make regular, modest grants to a select few recipients, new grant seekers are not likely to have much luck with this funder. The foundation does occasionally make one-off grants to local organizations, but with no a public website or contact information, it seems the only way to gain access to this funder’s grants is to have a personal connection with Cameron family.

PROFILE: Established in 2006, the Cameron Family Foundation is steered by Dort Cameron and family. Dort A. Cameron III. graduated with an A.B. from Middlebury College and an M.B.A. from Boston University. He served as a co-head of high-yield and convertible bonds at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Cameron went on to found Airlie Group LP.

The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Tax filings suggest that the Cameron Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking for education. It also earmarks funds for other community causes like health and the environment.

Grants for Education

The foundation’s education grantmaking primarily supports schools with which the family has a personal connection. It makes regular biennial donations to:

  • Rippowam Cisqua School, a private PreK-9 school in Westchester County, NY

  • Waterside School, a private K-5 school in Stamford, CT

  • Loomis Chaffee School, a private college-prep secondary school in Windsor, CT

  • Middlebury College, Dort’s alma mater, in Middlebury, VT.

Grants for Health and Community Development

In the past, the Cameron Family Foundation has also made grants to organizations supporting human services, cultural preservation, and community development in its giving regions, such as Bedford Historical Society, Porter Medical Center, Bedford Free Library, Westmoreland Sanctuary, and Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation.
