Over the past two decades, local newspapers and journalism jobs in the United States have been under fire. As the old model of journalism is collapsing, philanthropy works to fill gaps, as well as bolster an institution that is critical to democracy and an informed population. Inside Philanthropy’s State of American Philanthropy brief on Giving for Journalism and Public Media describes a philanthropic space that has grown considerably in recent years. Topics include efforts to curb disinformation; funding for investigative reporting; and what funders are doing to support equity in media. Subscribers can find information about: longtime and new journalism funders; the nonprofit news ecosystem; and why funders who have not previously funded journalism are getting involved.

Explore the foundations, major donors, and corporations that are making nonprofit grants for journalism and media.
