SOURCE OF WEALTH: Technology Crossover Ventures

FUNDING AREAS: Higher education, Bay Area community, health

OVERVIEW: Jay Hoag and his wife, Michaela, do their grantmaking through the Hoag Family Foundation, which made around $1.4 million in grants in a recent year. Interests include education and health, particularly Alzheimer’s research.

BACKGROUND: Jay Hoag has a B.A. in economics and political science from Northwestern University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He was a managing director at Chancellor Capital Management, where he worked as a technology-focused venture capitalist and fund manager. In 1995, he cofounded Technology Crossover Ventures, which has raised over $12 billion and emerged as a leading provider of growth capital to technology companies.

ISSUES:

HIGHER EDUCATION: The Hoags, via their foundation, support Michaela’s school, Boston College. Other grantees include Northeastern University, Eastside College Preparatory School, the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula, Vanderbilt University and The Riekes Center, a California organization “that helps students achieve goals in fitness, arts and nature.”

BAY AREA COMMUNITY: The family is based in Palo Alto, and has supported local outfits Meals on Wheels San Francisco, St. Raymond Catholic Church and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bay Area.

HEALTH: Michaela is the founder and chair of Part the Cloud, which aims to “educate, fundraise and to accelerate critically needed Alzheimer’s disease research.” The forces here are personal as Michaela lost her father to early-onset Alzheimer’s. The outfit has raised at least $17 million to date. The couple has also supported Alzheimer’s Association.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Hoags to stick with their interest areas.
