OVERVIEW:  The Joan C and David Henle Foundation makes grants for education, the environment, youth, health, and sports.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. Its grantmaking is not transparent. Be sure to network to get on this funder’s radar.

PROFILE: Founded in 1997, the Joan C. and David Henle Foundation was established by Goldman Sachs veteran David Henle and his wife Joan. Henle is a managing member of DLH Capital Inc. in New York City. Since the foundation prefers a low profile approach, it is unclear how it strategizes grantmaking. According to tax filings, the foundation funds various interests, but tends to prioritize education and health.

Grants for Higher Education and Public Health

The foundation’s education giving tends to draw from the couple’s background. David Henle grew up in Hyde Park in New York’s Hudson Valley. Joan and David now live in Bronxville, New York in Westchester County, an important region of giving.

Past grantees include Union College in Schenectady, NY. Other grantees include The Bronxville School Foundation (the couple’s sons attended Bronxville School), Concordia College, Blythesdale Children’s Hospital, St. Aloysius School, and Graham Windham, which “strives to make a life-altering difference with children, youth and families affected by abuse, neglect and delinquency by providing each child we serve with a strong foundation for life.”

Important Grant Details

Grants range from $100 to $650,000. In a recent year, the foundation gave away around $866,000. Keeping a low-profile, this is not a transparent funder, so it is unclear if it accepts unsolicited applications and LOIs.
