Contributed income accounted for more than half of operating revenue for arts organizations across the U.S. every year from 2020 to 2023, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/culturaldata.org\/national-trends-2024\/funding-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SMU Data Arts<\/a>. Indeed, earned income has been in decline in recent years for all types of arts organizations, making contributed income increasingly important to keeping arts organizations afloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visual arts philanthropy is dominated by extraordinarily wealthy individual donors, especially when it comes to high-profile capital gifts and board membership at large museums in big cities. That said, visual arts grantmaking occurs at every level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large and small private foundations, community foundations, and <a href=\"https:\/\/usregionalarts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regional arts organizations<\/a>, which are funded by a mix of public and private dollars, make grants for individual artists and nonprofit art organizations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansforthearts.org\/by-program\/networks-and-councils\/local-arts-network\/what-is-a-local-arts-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Local arts agencies<\/a> are important supporters of visual arts. Intermediaries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-c\/creative-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Capital<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpeoplesfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Peoples Fund<\/a>, and many others also play a role in visual arts philanthropy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- Non-displaying inline paywall marker. Position this block before the first full-width paragraph or just above the foundations list heading. -->\n<div id=\"ipInlineOffer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container foundation-list paywall gb-block-container\"><div class=\"gb-container-inside\"><div class=\"gb-container-content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where are visual arts grants going?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers Louis Shekhtman and Albert-L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Barab\u00e1si looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-38815-1#:~:text=The%20patterns%20we%20uncover%20indicate,empirical%20confirmation%20has%20been%20lacking.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foundation grants for art from 2010 to 2019<\/a> and found that arts philanthropy often concentrates on the local level. The same researchers, IP\u2019s Mike Scutari <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2022-10-4-how-much-money-is-going-to-the-arts-and-where-is-it-headed-tax-data-analysis-offers-fresh-insights\">reports<\/a>, documented a high level of donor retention in arts philanthropy, with funders forming relationships with arts organizations that they engage with year after year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visual arts philanthropy broadly overlaps with grantmaking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/arts-education-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arts education<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/arts-culture-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>and grantmaking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/arts-culture-grants\">arts and culture<\/a>. The funder affinity group Grantmakers in the Arts offers resources related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giarts.org\/arts-funding-at-the-intersection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grantmaking at the intersections of the arts<\/a> and issues including health, social justice, the environment, and community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lion\u2019s share of visual arts funding invests in museums. Visual arts grants also support nonprofit galleries, community galleries, community arts centers, art conservation and art history programs, as well as individual artists via fellowships, awards, and artist residencies. There are also grants to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2024-3-25-a-conversation-with-anne-kraybill-the-new-ceo-of-art-bridges-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase access to the arts<\/a>, capacity-building grants such as grants for arts organizations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2024-2-7-improving-nonprofit-tech-can-be-tricky-heres-how-one-funder-is-getting-it-right\">update their technology<\/a>, grants dedicated to supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2023-6-12-latinx-artist-fellowships\">underrepresented artists<\/a>, and many other types of grants for the visual arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gaps in visual arts funding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the largest donations for visual art support prominent museums in major metropolitan areas, a funding gap exists at every level beyond this scope.
