The Green Revolution, backed by major philanthropies such as the Rockefeller, Ford, and Gates foundations, was inspired by the idea that industrial agriculture would both reduce hunger and improve the lives and livelihoods of farmers. Unfortunately, it has become clear that large-scale agriculture did not solve hunger, and has harmed small-scale farmers as well as the planet. Agriculture is responsible for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10%<\/a> of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Worldwide, \u201cGrowing, processing and transporting food accounts for one-third of all global greenhouse gas emissions,\u201d reports the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, a donor collaborative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2023-5-18-7-questions-with-anna-lapp-incoming-head-of-the-global-alliance-for-the-future-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Alliance<\/a> \u2014 whose members include major philanthropies such as the Rockefeller, W. K. Kellogg, Walton Family, and Packard foundations \u2014 reflects a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2024-7-29-billionaires-climate-donors-interest-in-food-and-ag-is-surging-thats-helped-this-fund-soar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surge in philanthropic interest in sustainable agriculture<\/a>, which lies at the intersection of food systems, the environment, and human rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it still accounts for a relatively small share of all philanthropy, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2023-2-15-whos-betting-big-on-sustainable-agriculture-here-are-some-of-the-key-funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainable agriculture grantmaking space<\/a> has seen a lot of growth and diversification in recent years. The affinity group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agandfoodfunders.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders<\/a> (SAFSF) has more than 100 members, including private foundations, community foundations, individual investors, and corporate philanthropies. There is a high level of collaboration among donors in this space, as evidenced by SAFSF, the Global Alliance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/agroecologyfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agroecology Fund<\/a>, Funders for Regenerative Agriculture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tifsinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Transformational Investing in Food Systems<\/a>, and other funder groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As IP has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2022\/8\/29\/six-questions-for-the-experts-at-sustainable-agriculture-and-food-systems-funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2022-8-29-six-questions-for-the-experts-at-sustainable-agriculture-and-food-systems-funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interviews with experts at SAFSF<\/a>, funders in this space are showing a \u201cgreater awareness of and desire to engage with underserved communities, community- and BIPOC-led organizations,\u201d as well as addressing systemic racism in food supply-chain issues, land access, and agriculture practices. More funding \u2014 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2023-6-12-tracking-green-regrantors-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">green regrantors<\/a>, among others \u2014 has also flowed to creating access to Indigenous land and supporting Indigenous farming practices.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!-- Non-displaying inline paywall marker. Position this block before the first full-width paragraph or just above the foundations list heading. -->\n<div id=\"ipInlineOffer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-container foundation-list paywall gb-block-container\"><div class=\"gb-container-inside\"><div class=\"gb-container-content\">\n<p>Another fast-growing area of agriculture philanthropy is regenerative agriculture, a holistic approach that considers how food systems impact everything from water to climate change. The donor collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/forainitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Funders for Regenerative Agriculture<\/a> (FORA), which first met in 2019, had more than 60 members by 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the impacts of climate change multiply, experts from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2022\/8\/29\/six-questions-for-the-experts-at-sustainable-agriculture-and-food-systems-funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAFS<\/a>F cite a deep need for \u201cmore systemic solutions and approaches to climate mitigation through agriculture.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where are sustainable agriculture grants going?&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants for sustainable agriculture overlap with grantmaking areas including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/food-and-nutrition-grants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> food security and nutrition<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/fundraising-for-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-for-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmental conservation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-for-racial-justice-equity\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-for-racial-justice-equity\">racial justice<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-for-indigenous-rights\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/find-a-grant\/grants-for-indigenous-rights\">Indigenous rights<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grants for sustainable agriculture fund many different types of projects, both locally and globally. Some grants focus on environmental conservation, such as grants for research into agricultural practices that do not degrade soil. Some funders make grants to support Indigenous land rights and traditional agriculture in Indigenous communities. Grants are also made for policy advocacy, such as to address the over-subsidization of the largest and wealthiest farming operations in the U.S., or to groups that advocate for plant-based eating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gaps in sustainable agriculture funding<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although sustainable agriculture is a fast-growing grantmaking area, it still accounts for only a small share of climate philanthropy. \u201cDespite the potential for climate mitigation and adaptation, food systems are consistently underestimated and underfunded,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/futureoffood.org\/insights\/untapped-opportunities-climate-financing-for-food-systems-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Alliance for the Future of Food<\/a>. That speaks to grantmaking as well as impact investing. Globally, only 3% of climate finance is going to food systems transformation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2023-5-18-7-questions-with-anna-lapp-incoming-head-of-the-global-alliance-for-the-future-of-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Alliance\u2019s Anna Lapp\u00e9 told IP<\/a>.
