Individual Wall Street donors – and the foundations many of them have endowed – are far from a homogenous group. Their politics span the spectrum, and their charitable giving reflects a wide array of priorities and philanthropic strategies.

Wall Street donors’ funding priorities range from the arts (Andrew and Ann Tisch) to the sciences (the Simons Foundation, K. Many of them, including those already named, support an array of causes. Bloomberg Philanthropies is a major funder of public health, climate, education and arts initiatives, for example. Steve and Alexandra Cohen give for underserved communities, children, the arts, mental health, and veterans.

A number of Wall Street philanthropists prioritize New York City in their charitable giving, but it’s important to note that not every philanthropist whose wealth comes from Wall Street is actually based in New York. Donors with wealth from finance are located all over the country, and some of them engage in place-based giving well outside New York. The Sacks Family Foundation, for example, makes grants for Chicago organizations, and the Frist Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in Nashville.

Wall Street funders also employ a variety of giving vehicles, including family foundations such as Marc and Jennifer Lipschultz’s, private foundations such as Open Society Foundations, LLCs such as John and Laura Arnold’s Arnold Ventures, and donor-advised funds.

Corporate Philanthropy from the Finance Sector

Nonprofits can also find funding from banks, which are important corporate funders in this space. Banks are encouraged by the Community Reinvestment Act, passed in 1977 after a history of redlining, to meet the credit needs of the communities in which they do business, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. This can be a source of funding for nonprofits whose work contributes to fair and inclusive economies. CRA funding supports community and economic development initiatives such as affordable housing development, workforce development, small business creation, and increasing access to financial services. “A dramatic increase in bank philanthropy to promote inclusive growth has also been the result of settlements with the federal government in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis and the abusive lending practices that preceded it,” IP reported in our State of American Philanthropy brief on Wall Street Giving.

In addition to CRA funding and corporate social responsibility initiatives, many banks also have corporate foundations or corporate giving programs. Banks’ corporate foundations also tend to give for community and economic development, and many of them also support a range of activities, including education and the arts.

How to Find Grants from Wall Street Donors

While some are famous and many are hard to reach, there are many donors giving from Wall Street fortunes who may be more approachable, especially when it comes to organizations doing good work in their priority geographic or issue area.
