OVERVIEW: The Kayne Foundation is the philanthropic organization of investor Richard Kayne, his wife Suzanne, and family. The family’s grantmaking prioritizes Los Angeles, where they support education, the arts, and other causes. Kayne strongly supports his alma mater UCLA.

IP TAKE: The foundation has a limited web presence and does not accept unsolicited proposals. Foundation president Suzanne is available on Linkedin.

PROFILE: The Kayne Foundation was established in 1986 by Richard Kayne, one half of the cofounding team of Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors. The other half, the late John E. Anderson, was a major benefactor of UCLA, whose business school is named after him. Richard Kayne earned a bachelor’s in statistics from Stanford University in 1966 and an MBA from UCLA in 1968. Kayne began his career as an analyst in New York with Loeb, Rhodes & Co. He was a principal of Cantor Fitzgerald and in 1984 went on to cofound Kayne Anderson, a Los Angeles-based manager of alternative investment strategies. Kayne is not on the Forbes billionaire list, but some sources refer to him as a billionaire.

Grants for Education

The Kaynes fund education reform efforts in Los Angeles. The family has strongly supported Camino Nuevo Charter Academy in Los Angeles, as well as KIPP LA Schools, Alliance for College Ready Schools, and others. The family also supports youth organizations like Baby2Baby, which “provides low-income children ages 0-12 months with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves.”

The Kaynes have also strongly supported UCLA, Kayne’s graduate alma mater. A few years ago, Kayne and his wife Suzanne made a $5 million grant to create Suzanne Kayne Investment Management Specialization Program Fund at UCLA Anderson School of Management. The family continues to support UCLA via the Kayne Family Foundation.

Grants for Arts and Culture

Suzanne Kayne sits on the board of LACMA, which has received strong support. Other L.A. arts grantees include Hammer Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Skirball Cultural Center, and Santa Monica Museum of Art. Several of the couple’s kids are involved in the arts world and one daughter has a gallery in Los Angeles.

Grants for Health

The Kaynes also support health and human services in Los Angeles and have made grants to organizations like City of Hope, Women’s Cancer Research Fund, and Homeboy Industries, which “provides hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women.”

Important Grant Details

The Kayne family also supports the Jewish community in Los Angeles. They have helped fund Jewish Family Services, and Jewish Community Foundation, among others.
