Funding landscape and giving trends in Maine

Giving by Maine foundations and from donor-advised funds is exploding. According to the Main Philanthropy Center, Maine funders matched the surge of national giving in wake of 2020 and then pulled back 2021, decreasing funding and adjusted for inflation. Since then, over 2,600 grantmakers have collectively given more than $500 million in grants for Maine. Individuals account for more than half of charitable giving in Maine, according to the Maine Philanthropy Center.

Across Maine, knowledge about grants for Maine is produced by the Maine Philanthropy Center. Education, human services, and health remain top funding priorities of leading Maine grantmakers. The environment is a top priority of the majority of donors involved with the Maine Community Foundation, which together with the Maine Philanthropy Center established a Climate and Environmental Funders Network that brings together more than 100 environmentally concerned Maine funders.
