SOURCE OF WEALTH: Masters Capital Management

FUNDING AREAS: Financial Reform

OVERVIEW:  Michael Masters launched Better Markets to help reform Wall Street in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.

BACKGROUND: Michael W. Masters graduated from University of Tennessee in 1989. He is the founder and managing member of Masters Capital Management, a global investment management firm.

ISSUES:

FINANCIAL REFORM: In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, Masters launched Better Markets, a “non-profit, non-partisan, and independent organization founded to promote the public interest in the financial markets, support the financial reform of Wall Street and make our financial system work for all Americans again.” Better Markets is not only a “Wall Street watchdog” but also a government watchdog, “calling attention to those who fail to serve the public, including regulators and prosecutors who fail to enforce the law on Wall Street.” Over its history, Better Markets has delved into over 225 federal rulemaking processes, where the particulars of Dodd-Frank and other legislation get hammered out.

OTHER: The Masters are steady backers of Partners in Health, an organization dedicated to improving healthcare for the world’s poorest people. Masters sits on the board of the organization.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect Masters to remain laser-focused on his work through Better Markets.
