OVERVIEW: The Monderer Foundation aims to expands life’s possibilities for children and adults with multiple disabilities.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. This funder is not very transparent and does not provide much in the way of clear funding priorities or details about what it looks for in grantees. While it does provide an email address for general inquiries, overall, the foundation leaves grantseekers with the need to network here.

PROFILE: The Monderer Foundation was established in 2004. It was founded by Benjamin and Carol Turchin Monderer. The couple cofounded Box Hill Systems Corp, a maker of data-storage systems. Benjamin is currently chairman of Alphagenome, a venture capital firm in New York, and Carol currently serves as CEO of Alphagenome and also of Carol Monderer Publishing. The foundation maintains a website, but restricts information regarding its grantmaking process. The Monderer Foundation aims to expands life’s possibilities for children and adults with multiple disabilities.

Grants for Public Health and Access

The Monderers steadily support The Center for Discovery and helped name the Michael Wittenberg Center for Imagination at the outfit. The center “provides individuals with a range of disabilities and medical frailties innovative educational, clinical, residential, and social and creative arts experiences designed to enrich their lives through personal accomplishment.” 

Past grantees include West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Columbia University (Benjamin Monderer graduated from the school), and Columbia Prep & Grammar School. 

Important Grant Details

Grants range from $250 to $75,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away a little under $180,000. The Monderer Foundation keeps a low profile and does not detail its grantmaking process. However, it is open to inquiries at info@mondererfoundation.org
