OVERVIEW: The Northeast Florida Area Agency on Aging – ElderSource makes grants to support Florida’s senior population and their caregivers.

IP TAKE: Now half a century old, ElderSource is one of the largest grantmakers for aging in Northeast Florida. It’s a very transparent funder, but you shouldn’t expect to find support here. It doesn’t review unsolicited proposals and typically limits its funding to nonprofits affiliated in some way with local governments in its seven-county geographic interest area. Grantseekers may want to try reaching out to one of ElderSource’s beneficiaries instead. Nevertheless, contact information is provided below.

PROFILE: Established in 1974, Northeast Florida Area Agency on Aging – ElderSource is a nonprofit organization that identifies and meets the needs of Florida’s elders and their caregivers. It seeks to empower “people to live and age with independence and dignity in their homes and community.” ElderSource was designated by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs as the Area Agency on Aging and Disability for Northeast Florida and covers Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, St. Johns and Volusia counties. Grants support county programs that benefit the region’s older citizens and their families.

Grants for Public Health and Aging

ElderSource’s grantmaking supports programs that benefit Florida’s older population and their families and caregivers by providing essential services like “emergency energy assistance, congregate and home delivered meals, recreation, education, shopping assistance, case management, health support, home repair and modification, adult day care, homemaker, personal care, legal assistance and transportation as well as support, training, counseling and respite for caregivers including grandparents raising grandchildren.”

  • Examples of grantees include Council on Aging of Volusia County, St Johns County Council on Aging, Nassau County Council on Aging, Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center, Community Legal Services of Mid Florida, and LJD Jewish Family & Community Services in Jacksonville.
  • In addition to grants, it also offers a range of service programs and resources for aging individuals, including the EASE Program (Emergency Assistance Serving Elders), which helps older adults continue to live independently after experiencing an unexpected financial crisis.

Important Grant Details

Grant amounts typically range between $5,000 and $5 million, although the most common amount is closer to $75,000. ElderSource awarded around $22 million in grants in a recent year.
