Funding landscape and giving trends in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is a state that would benefit from more funding, both private and public. A 2022 survey conducted by the Grantmakers Council of Rhode Island and United Way of Rhode Island found that nonprofits in the state are struggling as a result of inadequate resources. In 2019, Candid reports, about 2,100 grantmakers collectively made about $619 million in grants for Rhode Island. 

Grantmakers Council of Rhode Island, a network of private and public funders, focus on philanthropic activity in the state. Rhode Island grantmakers’ funding priorities include health, education, financial literacy, the environment, humanities, and basic needs, according to GCRI.  

Grants for Rhode Island come from private, family, community, and corporate foundations. Leading funders of Rhode Island grants include Rhode Island Foundation, United Way of Rhode Island, Warren Alpert Foundation, Van Beuren Charitable Foundation, CVS Health Foundation, Edward N. & Della L. Thome Memorial Foundation, Henrietta F. Dexter Trust, Hassenfeld Foundation, Dr. Ralph and Marian Falk Medical Research Trust, The Salem Foundation, and Jonathan M. Nelson Family Foundation.
