OVERVIEW: The Stevens Family Foundation mainly funds grantmaking related to education. Smaller areas of interest are arts and culture, health, the environment and wildlife conservation.

IP TAKE: The Stevens Family Foundation maintains a low profile and mainly gives in the state of Washington, where it supports graduate STEM education, private K-12 schools and a few health, arts and culture and conservation outfits. Stevens doesn’t accept applications or provide a way to get in touch, so a connection to the family or a past grantee will be key here.

PROFILE: The Stevens Family Foundation was established in 2004 by Microsoft veteran Charles Stevens and his wife, Delphine, a lawyer. The foundation does not maintain a website, but tax filings indicate that this funder’s main area of giving is education. To a lesser extent, it supports arts and culture, the environment, health and global causes. The foundation’s main geographic focus is the state of Washington.

Grants for K-12 and Higher Education

Education is the Stevens Family Foundation’s largest area of giving, with grants supporting K-12 and higher education.

  • K-12 grants tend to support private schools in Seattle. Grantees include the Seattle Country Day School, the Bertschi School, the Lakeside School and the Giddens School. In Bellevue, the foundation has made grants to the Little School and the Open Window School.
  • Delphine is a member of the Seattle chapter of ARCS, which supports fellowships for graduate students in STEM fields at the the University of Washington and Washington State University.
  • The foundation has also supported Ashesi University in Ghana.

Grants for Public Health

Charles Stevens has been on the board of Seattle Children’s Hospital for a decade, and the family steadily supports the institution.

Grants for Arts and Culture

The foundation’s arts and culture grantmaking tends to stay in Washington. Grantees include the Museum of Flight, the Seattle Art Museum, the Contemporary Theatre of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Grants for Environment, Animals and Wildlife

Giving for environmental and wildlife conservation supports a mix of Washington and national organizations. Recipients include the Seattle Aquarium, the Wildlife Conservation Network, the Sierra Club Foundation, the National Audubon Society and the Wild Salmon Center.

Grants for Global Development

This funder maintains an interest in African educational causes, although this is not a main area of giving. In addition to Ghana’s Ashesi University, grants have gone to the Rwanda Girls Initiative and the Seattle South African Scholarship Foundation.
