OVERVIEW: ViiV Healthcare’s Postive Action initiative supports community groups working on HIV/AIDS initiatives around the world and partners with larger groups across sectors to improve public policy related to AIDS prevention and care.

IP TAKE: ViiV Healthcare conducts its philanthropic work via its Positive Action program. With the overarching goal of ending AIDS, it partners with NGOs that work nationally to achieve goals and improve public policy, but it also makes grants to community organizations working on the front lines to get information and care to the people who need it most. The program accepts proposals for its community grants. Keep up with the latest by following ViiV’s social media accounts.

PROFILE: ViiV Healthcare is a global AIDS/HIV-focused pharmaceutical company. It was established in 2009 through a unique partnership between pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. The Japanese pharmaceutical company Shionogi joined the group in 2012. The company’s philanthropic engagements stem from its Positive Action program, which pursues a mission to “be a transformational partner that champions people and communities to end AIDS.” Giving targets communities around the world that are “affected by HIV and AIDS.” The program runs chapters in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Italy and France, but giving is not limited to these countries.

Grants for Global Health and Diseases

The Positive Action program names two overarching goals: to achieve “health communities in a world free of AIDS” and “leaving no person living with HIV behind.” Beyond these broad goals, grantmaking through the year 2030 will focus on the following priorities:

  • Ending pediatric AIDS
  • Preventing the spread of HIV
  • Working to end the stigma associated with HIV
  • Ensuring that all people, including those who use drugs, have access to care

The program offers the following types of grants:

  • Grants for Community Strategic Initiatives focus on ” community-led and community-based organisations” that work to prevent and care for people with AIDS/HIV.
    • A subset of these grants, Innovator Grants, provide grants of up to £100,000 over two years for pilot projects of approaches that are new to the community being served.
    • Momentum Funding provides grants of up to £300,000 for three years to scale successful, evidence-based programs for prevention and/or care.

This program accepts applications annually. See up-to-date guidelines and due dates here. Past grantees include Colombia’s Red Somos, Youthrise Nigeria and the Pediatric Breakthrough Partnership, which is working to end pediatric AIDS in Cameroon, Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda.

  • ViiV Health care also invests in Strategic Partnerships through which the company “co-creates” new programs with one or more organizational partners from different sectors and stakeholders in the field. These are typically long-term partnerships that aim to “achieve national HIV-related targets, including advocacy and policy change efforts.” ViiV does not typically accept applications for this program, but interested organizations may check this page for the latest information about the program.

Strategic partners include AIDSFonds, UNICEF and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.

  • Additional funding is available to grantees via the Amplify Impact Fund, which support organizational development, staffing needs and professional development.
  • ViiV also supports community organizations via its Positive Action Guidance on Renumeration for Community Workers program, which helps organizations recruit, train and develop appropriate compensation programs for community workers. Contact pa.generalenquiries@viivhealthcare.com for additional information about this opportunity.
