SOURCE OF WEALTH: SS&C Technologies

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Health & Human Services, Religious

OVERVIEW: William Stone and his wife Mary move their philanthropy through the Sage & Dice Foundation, which gave around $166,000 in a recent year. The couple support education, the arts and religious institutions. Giving tends to prioritize organizations based in or benefitting Florida and the Midwest.

BACKGROUND: A native of Evansville, Indiana, William C. Stone graduated from Marquette University. He worked for KPMG. In 1986, he started financial software firm SS&C Technologies.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Stones have supported places like Nichols College, Reitz Memorial High School, and Grace Academy. The couple gave $15 million to U. of Southern Indiana Foundation in 2018 to support the Health Sciences Center. They also gave $34.2 million to establish the Mary O’Daniel Stone and Bill Stone Center for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Indiana U. School of Medicine in 2021.

ARTS & CULTURE: Grantees include Naples Botanical Garden and Naples Zoo. Stone has operated SS&C SummerWind Performing Arts Center in Windsor, Connecticut, which the couple steadily supported. The institution is now closed.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The Stones have supported St. Vincent Center for Children in Evansville and bankrolled a playground bearing the name of Stone’s mother. They’ve supported Saint Francis Hospital, Ocular Melanoma Foundation and Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

RELIGIOUS: The Stones have earmarked funds for the Catholic Foundation of Southwestern Indiana and New Canaan Society, “a group of men who gather together to encourage each other in friendship and faith and support each other to be better husbands, fathers and better men, in the marketplace and in our communities.”

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple to stick with their established interest areas.
